The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially closed the by-election campaigns ahead of elections slated for Tuesday, December 15.
The campaign period commenced on October 15 and lapsed on the midnight of December 12.
The by-elections will be held in, Msambweni where residents will elect their Member of Parliament and in Kahawa Wendani, Kisumu North, Lake View, Dabaso and Wundanyi where residents will elect their ward representatives.
The electoral commission announced on Sunday, December 13, that it was set to conduct the exercise.
Among all the seats that are expected to be voted for, the Msambweni parliamentary seat which fell vacant after the death of Suleiman Dori attracted the attention of political heavyweights.
Deputy President William Ruto’s camp and Raila Odinga’s tried to outdo each other while drumming support for their candidates.
As the final day of the vote hunt came to a close on Saturday, December 12, a section of Tanga Tanga politicians led by Soy MP Caleb Kositany joined Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya to campaign for Feisal Bader who is running as an independent candidate.
Among others, Senator Millicent Omanga, MP Oscar Sudi, former senator Boni Khalwale, MP Aisha Jumwa and Kositany were among the Ruto allies who drummed up support for the candidate.
On the other hand, the Opposition party led by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, ODM secretary-general Edwin Sifuna and MP Junet Mohammed held rallies at Ukunda and Diani wards to woo voters to support Idd Boga.
This sparked mixed reactions especially from the DP’s camp with Sudi saying the president had defected to the Raila Odinga led outfit.
