When young Uhuru Kenyatta joined prestigious St Mary’s School nicknamed Saints in late 1960s, he was chauffeured to school by bodyguards attached to his family.
According to a classmate Charles Ouko, Uhuru and his younger siblings Muhoho and Nyokabi were not treated in special manner at Saints but the ride to school was enviable.
However, when he joined the high school Uhuru like other students got the privilege to drive and park in the school.
Mugo Karuga, a retired GSU officer interviewed recently by a local daily said he chauffeured Uhuru and his two siblings from Gatundu to St Mary’s in a Mercedes Benz 280 SE model, registration number KPS 810.
When Uhuru was old enough, he drove himself to the school in a Mercedes Benz, a car he used to sneak to Margaret Gakuo’s Karen home after they started a relationship while still in high school.
Ouko who has written about his interaction with Uhuru since their elementary to high school days said the president then drove a cream Mercedes Benz 190E, registration number KWT 185.
It was the car he went outings in alongside Maina Gakuo, Margaret’s elder brother.
Uhuru and Maina were schoolmates and close friends at Saints.
Through Maina, the president’s son met Margaret, daughter of late Njuguna Gakuo who was the first African managing director of Kenya Railways and as they say it was love at first sight.
They started dating when Uhuru was at Saints and Margaret was schooling at St Andrew School in Molo.
Margaret accepted Uhuru’s overtures and Uhuru embarked on regular visits to Karen’s Rhino Park side where Margaret was brought up.
Then Rhino Park had rough roads which according to neighbours Uhuru endured and sometimes veered into the ditches or stuck in the mud.
The two pursued education abroad in different schools but kept the love fire burning and in 1989 they wedded at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.
