President Muhammadu Buhari was carrying a huge weight on his shoulders right from the inception of his administration in 2015.
The expectations were actually so high for Buhari that he was bound to face challenges in realising his promises to Nigerians.
However, the president has weathered the storm to deliver on some of his campaign promises he made to Nigerians.
As the year 2020 winds down, Legit.ng highlights 3 undeniable feats of the Buhari administration.
The success of the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government in the area of agriculture cannot be denied.
While past administrations preached the rhetoric of trying to make Nigeria food sufficient, the Buhari government is the only administration in recent times that has taken practical steps to make Nigeria food sufficient.
The Buhari regime has ensured that agriculture is one of the three pillars through which the economy can be diversified and expanded.
The drive by the current federal government helped make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production. Nigeria, which was once known as a world importer of rice is now known as a producer of rice, a feat that even Buhari’s critics cannot deny.
While Nigeria has not yet attained its goal of complete food sufficiency under the current administration, it is evident that since 1999, no government has recorded the type of success this regime has achieved in the area of agriculture.

Modernisation of Nigerian railway
It is true that government is a continuum and most policies span across several administrations. One of such chain policy is the modernisation of the Nigerian railway.
While successive governments have been credited for initiating the process, the Buhari administration has given a boost to the modernisations of the Nigerian railway.
The Revolution of the Nigerian railway under the Buhari administration is so evident that some people who are not loyalists of the government have admitted that Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation is really working.
Many rail projects across the country have been upgraded to the new Standard Gauge Rail (SGR) lines.
Some of them include the 327km Warri-Ajaokuta-Itakpe line, the 168km Abuja-Kaduna rail project, and the 157km Lagos-Ibadan line, among others.
Although most of these projects were conceived many years before the Buhari administration, they had never received the kind of attention they got from the current administration.

The eradication of Polio
In the area of health, Nigeria is the last African country to be declared free from wild polio, and this feat was realised under the Buhari administration.
Polio is a virus that spreads from person to person, usually through contaminated water. It can cause irreversible paralysis and is deadly. Polio usually affects children under five, sometimes death can occur when breathing muscles are affected.
Since 1988 when the World Health Assembly declared the virus a disease of international concern that must be eradicated, successive administrations in Nigeria put every effort in place to rapidly boost immunity levels in children and protect them from polio paralysis.
Over the years, efforts to eradicate the disease in Nigeria were met with various obstacles ranging from parents, who did not believe that the disease existed and refused to submit their children to be immunised to some community and religious leaders who often give misleading information about the virus.

However, the Buhari administration sustained the determination of successive governments at all levels, including development partners, non-governmental organisations, religious and traditional rulers to ensure success in the fight against the disease.
Following this, Nigerians woke up on June 18, 2020, to hear the cheerful news of the declaration of their country a polio-free one by the World Health Organization (WHO).
While the fight against polio was done by successive governments, the disease was eradicated under the Buhari regime.
