Government has finally released money to the Ministry of Local Government to procure bicycles for the LCI chairpersons and motorcycles for LCIII chairpersons.

The development was revealed by the State Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Peter Ogwang, immediately after the launch of yellow bicycles meant for all National Resistance Movement party village chairpersons.

President on Sunday launched the yellow bicycles to be given to 68,700 NRM branch chairpersons countrywide.

Ogwang, who participated at the yellow bicycles function, said the LC1 and Chairpersons should no longer worry since the government has already undertaken financial steps to solve their locomotive challenges.

“The Ministry of Local Government has received funds to procure bicycles and motorcycles for all LC1I and LCIII chairpersons respectively,” said Ogwang.

Government last year promised to finance the procurement of transport means for local government leaders this financial year of 2020/2021 after pressure from Parliament and Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

State Minister of Finance, David Bahati told Parliament in August 2019 that the transport for LCs was among the top priorities and was meant to be fulfilled this year.

The Sub-County chairpersons last month petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga over motorcycles for their work. The Sub County bosses in their petition read by Erisa Sebaale of Nama Sub County in Mukono district said the Government undertook to give them motorcycles in 2018 but nothing has been fulfilled two years down the road.

Speaker Kadaga noted that the LC III chairpersons are instrumental in the implementation of government programs in their respective sub counties and promised to engage the Local Government Minister, Raphael Magyezi on the matter.
