A recently resurfaced Tweet has caused controversy around Toronto Centre Liberal candidate Marci Ien, according to a new report by True North. Ien is currently running in a by-election to replace disgraced former Finance Minister Bill Morneau.

BREAKING: Toronto Centre Liberal candidate once promoted 9/11 truther movie

A former television host, Ien is a well known figure in Toronto. She worked for CTV and was the host of The Social. Trudeau acclaimed Ien in Toronto Centre on the same day she announced she was interested in running. Many are now questioning whether a vetting process should have been in order.

In her tweet, she referenced watching a documentary called “Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup,” which is a conspiracy theory film promoting the idea that 9/11 was an inside job. The documentary is widely regarded to contain pseudo evidence, and the creator of the film even alleges he regrets making it.

A total of 2,977 people were killed on September 11th, 2001 after nineteen men hijacked four fuel-loaded US commercial airplanes bound for west coast destinations.

All major parties are running candidates in the riding, which is considered a safe Liberal seat. The NDP are running Brian Chang, who was the NDP candidate in the last Federal Election. The Conservatives are running Benjamin Sharma, who is also a previous candidate for the party.

The Green party stands out in the race as the newly elected leader, Annamie Paul is running to flip Toronto Centre.

This news comes just as Ien’s fellow Liberal candidate in York Centre is dealing with her own controversy. Ya’ara Saks is running as a Liberal in the York Centre by-election and is facing backlash after calling Israel “racist.”

It remains to be seen whether Marci Ien will apologize for her statement.

The by-election will take place on October 26th for Toronto Centre and York Centre.
