Food waste in online food orders and Internet live broadcasting of people eating will be brought under greater scrutiny in Shanghai.
This is one of the guidelines issued on Sunday by the Shanghai city government, which announced a campaign against food waste, after Chinese President Xi Jinping urged efforts to curb food waste in the country.
Local restaurants will be asked to indicate the amount of food and the recommended number of diners for each set of dishes on their menus and to offer food at smaller portions than standard amounts.
Good food waste management is also expected to factor in the government’s official recommendations of restaurants through various awards. Restaurants that do a good job could potentially pay less to the authorities in garbage sorting, according to the guidelines.
Travel agencies are asked to remind tourists to not waste food in group tours.
The campaign will also be carried out in schools, hospitals, factories, government organizations and communities.
