The Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon affirmed, this Monday evening, that France is “still far from going below the bar of 5000 contaminations” daily by the Covid-19. 3198 patients are currently in intensive care. Jean Castex is due to speak again on Thursday.
Will we be able to spend the Christmas holidays with the family? A few days ago, the government recommended to the French not to be more than six adults at the table without counting the children, to respect the health rules in the face of Covid-19.

DIRECT. Covid-19: Professor Jérôme Salomon predicts a “very difficult” winter, Jean Castex will speak on Thursday
Emmanuel Macron said from the outset, on October 28, that the confinement would end on December 15, provided that the number of new contaminations drops below 5,000 new cases per day and that the number of patients in intensive care is between 2,500 and 3,000 in all of France. Now, this target of 5,000 seems less and less attainable today.
“France is” still far from the goal of going below the 5,000 daily level of contaminations, “said Professor Jérôme Salomon, the Director General of Health, on Monday evening. Currently, more than 11,000 new positive for Covid -19 are still detected every day against around 5,000 a week last summer. “Despite our best efforts, we are still facing a high risk of an epidemic rebound”.
Can we already say that the 5,000 cases will not be reached on December 15, as Emmanuel Macron wished? “It is difficult to predict the evolution but if the current conditions continue it will be very difficult to achieve this goal”, announced the director general of health. Could we then have to spend the holidays still confined? It is not for Pr Salomon to answer. However, he indicated that “the measures will be taken in due course with all the elements available”. Health authorities are currently in a diagnostic phase. If the French have made efforts to respect barrier gestures, the winter season – conducive to viral epidemics – does not help.
Jean Castex will speak on Thursday
With this in mind, a new Defense Council is announced for Wednesday morning while Jean Castex, the Prime Minister, will speak again Thursday alongside the Minister of Health Olivier Véran.
Prof. Salomon took the opportunity to launch an awareness message to the French for the holidays by affirming his fear “that significant contamination will take place” on the occasion of the end of the year holidays.
26,365 patients are hospitalized, including 3,198 in intensive care in France this Monday evening.
