Yesterday (November 21), Donald Trump opted to skip the G20 summit’s “Pandemic Preparedness” event in order to spend time at one of his golf clubs.
This incumbent president’s decision comes on the same day that a record 195,500 new Covid-19 cases were reported in a 24-hour period in the US, per the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.
As reported by The Guardian, the virtual summit was attended by many of the world’s most powerful leaders, such as France’s President Emmanuel Macron, who said at the event that “the only effective response to the pandemic will be a coordinated, global one, based on solidarity.”
Leaders from Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and South Korea were present at the event, which, according to a G20 press release, had the “ambition of bringing world leaders together to secure the necessary next steps towards a safer world and build an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future.”
But an hour before the summit started, Trump was photographed at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia.
In audio obtained by the Observer, Trump told other world leaders prior to leaving for his golf club: “I look forward to working with you again for a long time” – an apparent reference that he still plans on snatching a victory away from Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
Despite missing the “Pandemic Preparedness” event, Trump was in attendance earlier in the day for the main G20 summit earlier on Saturday, The Hill said.
However, according to the publication, just minutes after the weekend summit began, President Trump continued tweeting about the 2020 election results:
And last night, Trump tweeted: “The Fake News is not talking about the fact that ‘Covid’ is running wild all over the World, not just in the US. I was at the Virtual G-20 meeting early this morning and the biggest subject was Covid. We will be healing fast, especially with our vaccines!”
However, NBC News correspondent Garrett Haake quickly shot-down the president’s attendance at the summit, quote-tweeting:
“The President did attend the opening of the virtual G20 this morning… then skipped the side meeting with other world leaders that followed, which was entirely focused on pandemic preparedness and response, and went golfing.”
CNN’s Senior Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju also took a shot at Trump’s golfing habits, tweeting last night: “Day 303 of Trump’s presidency at one of his golf clubs. And the 414th day at one of his properties. Today, Trump is at his Virginia golf club.”
In total, John Hopkins now reports that the US has had 12,095,024 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, resulting in 255,911 deaths.
