A man who drove his car into the gate outside German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office has been released from custody, police say.
A spokesperson said there were no grounds to keep him under arrest or to have him detained at a psychiatric facility.
An investigation into the Wednesday incident, which caused a lot of commotion outside Merkel’s chancellery but no serious damage or injuries, is being carried out by a special police department tasked with probing politically motivated crimes.
The 54-year-old man struck the gate at a low speed.
The words, “You damned children and old people murderers,” and “Stop globalisation politics” were written on the body of his car.
In February 2014, he committed a similar stunt with the same car.
On that occasion, the vehicle bore a message about the dangers of climate change as well as the words, “Nicole I love you”.
