“We have to do everything we can now to ensure that the virus does not spread uncontrollably — every day counts,” said the Chancellor in her customary weekend video message. “I ask you to refrain from any trip that is not really necessary, any celebration that is not really necessary. Please stay at home — wherever you are, whenever possible,” she added.

The chancellor explained that Germans should make the sacrifices since they are for their own good and for the good of the society in general in that such sacrifices would enable schools and kindergartens to remain open and so that the nation’s economy and jobs are not affected further.

The comparatively relaxed summer is over; now we are facing difficult months. How winter will be, how our Christmas will be, will be decided in the coming days and weeks. We all decide that through our actions.”

Three Days of High Infections

Germany registered 7,830 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, which represents a new maximum for the third consecutive day, according to figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) of virology.

On  Friday, 7,334 cases were registered and on Thursday, 6,638 cases. In the last 24 hours, 33 deaths were also registered in the country due to covid-19.

Since the beginning of the pandemic,  Germany has had 356,387 confirmed infections.  So far, 9,767 people have died  and the RKI estimates that 287,600 have overcome the disease.

The current figures are clearly above those of spring when the maximum of new infections was registered on March 28 with 6,294, but comparing the data is tricky due to the increase in tests carried out that causes more cases to be discovered.

Last week, Chancellor Angela  Merkel held a meeting with the heads of government of the 16 federal states to coordinate measures to halt the spread of the pandemic.

The meeting arrived to a conclusion that special measures should be taken in districts and cities that record over 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in any particular week.

In  Berlin where very high weekly infections were recorded,  it had been decided that bars and restaurants would have to close at 23:00 but the courts declared the measure disproportionate.

Also, the prohibition of hotels from accommodating people from districts with a weekly incidence of more than 50 infections per 100,000 inhabitants has been challenged by the courts in several federal states.
