By Aaron Humes: Lest he be accused of being part of an alleged coverup, Leader of the Opposition, Johnny Briceno has written Prime Minister Dean Barrow asking for an update on the audit of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) announced in the wake of the resignation and retirement of former Chairman Nestor Vasquez.
Vasquez resigned but denies excessive overuse of the company credit card for personal expenses to the tune of a half million Belize dollars. It is also alleged that while Vasquez was BTL Chairman, advanced payments were made by BTL against an advertising contract with Tropical Vision Limited (Channel 7), a business owned by the Vasquez family.
Briceno wants to know the extent of the charges, the result of the company audit by PKF Belize, the Channel 7 contract and any approval by the Board of Telemedia; and whether Vasquez has been sued or reported to police. In his letter Briceno notes that it has been six weeks now since evidence of alleged misappropriation surfaced.
Briceno also ask about a report of a massive increase in overdraft use by BTL from its bankers; and whether Government has received dividends from the company for the last two years and if so how much.
Briceno says the people need to know the truth before election day and so he sets a deadline of 3 days from receipt of his letter to receive a response. Briceno’s letter was dated today, Friday, 30 October, 2020.
We will keep you informed of any response.
