The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) requested the United States to extradite the former secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, against whom there is an arrest warrant for his alleged responsibility in the crime of illicit enrichment.
According to what was reported by Milenio, officials of the The FGR indicated that a federal judge of the State of Mexico granted the arrest warrant, because the former official did not demonstrate the origin of 27 million pesos that were used for the purchase of real estate in Mexico.
The sources consulted by the Mexican newspaper explained thate the arrest warrant was issued a few days ago, and this is not the only matter where the former secretary is being investigated.

The prosecution also has an open investigation against him for other alleged property crimes related to companies and contracts obtained from various governments.
According to the FGR, the patrimonial declarations of the former secretary of state, “evidently did not coincide with what he had received in salaries and other income.”

García Luna was arrested in Dallas, in the state of Texas, after being charged in New York for conspiring to traffic drugs and making false statements, in addition to having received millions of dollars from the Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán cartel.
In United States, García Luna would have tried to hide the help provided to drug traffickers, for which he could face a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment. According to the investigations, in exchange for the bribes, the Sinaloa cartel obtained safe passage for its drug shipments, as well as sensitive legal information on the investigations opened against the cartel and rival groups.
