Former President of Uruguay Tabaré Vázquez suffered an “acute thrombosis of the left lower limb”, His son Álvaro revealed this Saturday to the press in front of the former president’s home, after last night a relapse in his health status linked to the lung cancer he suffered in 2019 was reported.
“It’s okay. He has had an acute event due to a deep thrombosis of the left lower limb ”, commented Vázquez, an oncologist by profession like his father, who added that “He is recovering well” and what is “Stable, painless, as always.”
“He is very well, talking -as he does every day- with us, making stories of his entire past life, of political activity, of football activity, receiving some close friends and taking great care of the health situation, which that gives it a special framework of care that it has to have ”, commented.
Added that The 80-year-old former president receives the care typical of “home hospitalization”, which are medical and nursing visits twice a day, “what will be happening until they are discharged.”
Vázquez was “concerned” by a version that circulated on Friday night about the supposed death of his father and clarified that “when there are things to communicate, good or bad, about his health” the family will do it.
According to the son of the former president, the current Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou; the vice president, Beatriz Argimón; and other political authorities had called to inquire about his father’s health.
This Saturday a nearby source told Efe what former president Vázquez “does not give up” despite the fact that “cancer gives you good and other days” and that I had been “talking for a long time” with him.
According to local media on Friday night, Vázquez suffered a worsening of his health, although he did not want to be hospitalized and remains at home.
Vázquez announced on August 18, 2019, when he was still President of Uruguay, that a pulmonary nodule with “very firm characteristics” was detected in him that it could be “a malignant process” and, five days later, he underwent an intervention which confirmed that the tumor was cancerous.
After medical treatment, on December 13 it was announced that he was cured of this cancer, although his physical condition since then has been quite delicate.
Tabaré Vázquez became the first left-wing president in Uruguay’s history by winning the 2004 elections as a candidate for the Frente Amplio (FA).
On March 1, he handed over the presidential sash to Lacalle Pou, of the National Party (PN, center-right), with whom in December he had traveled to Argentina for the inauguration of Alberto Fernández in a gesture of institutional stability, despite belonging to different matches.
