In the presence of the Tanzanian Prime Minister, , Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, and Dr. Asim Al-Jazzar, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities witnessed today, Wednesday, the ceremony of diverting the Rufiji River to implement the works on the main dam body.

The project aims to implement the works on the main dam body and the Julius Nyerere hydropower station with capacity 2,115 megawatts, on the Rufiji River, in the Stiglers Gorge, Tanzania.

The two Egyptian ministers are accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Egyptian Ambassador to Tanzania, a number of leaders of the two ministries, the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, officials of the Egyptian coalition implementing the project, the Arab Contractors and Swedish Electric companies, and officials of a number of Egyptian banks.

The Egyptian officials began the day by visiting the ceremony site, where the executive position of the works was explained by the officials of the Egyptian alliance implementing the project.

The Minister of Housing pointed out that the project to construct the Julius Nyerere Dam and Station is being implemented by the alliance of the “Arab Contractors” and “El Sewedy Electric” on the Rufiji River.

The contract was signed in December 2018, in the presence of the President of the Federal Republic of Tanzania, and Egypt’s Prime Minister Dr. , with a value of $2.9 billion, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to implement a project to build a dam and a 2,115-megawatt hydroelectric power station on the Rufiji River in Tanzania.

The project aims to generate 6307 thousand megawatt-hours per year, sufficient for the consumption of about 17 million Tanzanian families.

The dam controls the flood, protects the surrounding environment from the dangers of floods and swamps, and stores about 34 billion cubic meters of water in a new lake.
