Syrian presidential advisor may become FM

(ANSAmed) – BEIRUT, NOVEMBER 16 – Buthayna Shaaban,
currently an advisor to Syrian president Bashar al Assad, is at
the top of the list of candidates to take the place of
79-year-old Foreign Minister Walid Muallim, who died Monday
after representing Syria in the diplomatic arena for 15 years. Syrian political sources cited by Lebanese and other Arab media
said Monday morning that Shaaban, previously the personal
interpreter of Bashar’s father and former president Hafez, may
become the first female foreign minister of Syria. Another
possible successor is Faysal Miqdad, who has bene the second in
command in the foreign ministry for years. Syrian government
media have not yet reported who will be taking Muallim’s place.
